Citychurch is unique in that it ministers to a population whose existence many choose to ignore. If you were to ask the citizens in our city if they believe Amarillo has an inner-city or urban area, most would tell you Part of me can sympathize with this opinion. I live in a building in the Downtown area for two months until a crack addict led me over to an apartment unit in the North Heights neighborhood north of Amarillo Boulevard. The culture and lifestyle I found surprised me.

I learned that our city is very segregated. I learned that while most of the world considers Amarillo to be in the middle of rural America, there are those in our city that do not relate at all to a rural mind set. Many of these citizens were not born in Amarillo, but rather, moved here from urban areas all over the country to live next to their family members who are incarcerated in one of our nearby prisons.

I learned that I did not relate in any way to the young people I was trying to reach. I am grateful that God has helped us bridge the cultural gap between they heart of the urban young person and the presentation of an obviously white youth pastor. We have also come to appreciate the innovative teaching techniques that are available to us through the latest menu of digital video and audio tools.

We have also learned to rely on the Word of God to soften, reach and change the heart of the young people we minister to. Ultimately, we realize that it is the Holy Spirit who makes our efforts effective. We rely on Him every day.
